"A portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2014"

13/52: Olive drawing on the fridge.

It's been raining (sometimes torrentially) all week so in between sorting out a flooded foyer, submitting assignments and taking care of the B&B we've been doing lots of inside activities. Drawing and play-dough are current favourites.

"A portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2014"

12/52: A sweaty Olive with a scab under her nose (from a dining chair climbing related incident), reading Dr Suess.

It's been the first of a few busy weeks, with assignments due and Mum and Dad's Bed and Breakfast to look after (while they're laying on a beach somewhere in Hawaii). You can imagine how much fun it is trying to clean the B&B with a toddler in tow, putting grubby hand prints on things, trying to climb on beds and spreading mini shampoos about. Serenity now.

"A portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2014"

11/52: She loves watching TV on our bed while I fold washing. She also does a lot of jumping and throwing the folded washing around.

We had a much happier, less-teethy week, but we're still not getting much sleep (surprise, surprise). It's so hard to imagine that there'll ever be a time when this kid doesn't wake up a million times a night. Just to remind my future, well-slept (hopefully) self what a typical night at 16 months old looks like: Olive goes to bed around 7. Sometimes she'll fall asleep right away, but sometimes it takes up to 40 mins of me (or Lucas) rocking in her chair, or patting her in her cot until she finally falls asleep. Almost every night she wakes about 15 minutes after I've drifted off, at about 10.30, and I have to drag my delirious self out of bed to go give her back the dummy (even though there are about 5 in her bed and she could definitely get it herself). Lately she's been waking every hour after this until about 1am, when she'll finally sleep for about 3 or 4 hours straight. Then anywhere from 4.30 - 5.30 she'll wake up and either be ready to get out of bed, or stay in a light sleep, stirring every 15 minutes or so until I finally give in and put her in our bed to watch ABC4kids while I try to stay in bed until at least 6.30. Most mornings I don't last very long because, after about 4 hours sleep, I'm driven to the brink of insanity by her crawling all over me, elbows in my face, pinching any part of my body she can get her hands on and doing somersaults all over the bed.

There is something particularly insane about the human's urge to procreate. Evidence of this can be seen in the fact that despite all of the above I look at newborns and think "Oh, wouldn't another one be nice!".

"A portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2014"

10/52: Olive in the afternoon sun. We've had a long week of little sleep and lots of teething related tantrums (and very few photos). Every day, straight after breakfast, we've been going for a walk, grabbing a takeaway coffee and heading to the park. The distraction of being outside seems to cheer her up - if we stay in the house all morning we drive each other crazy, and I've been enjoying our little ritual. Yesterday she seemed much happier, so I went with a happy shot - fingers crossed we get a bit of a break from the never-ending teething hell!
